Do You Believe Vernon Has A Water Crisis? šŸ’§

ā€œWater, water, every where, nor any drop to drink.ā€ Coleridge wrote those words over 200 years ago, but they capture exactly where the Okanagan finds itself this year, surrounded by lakes, and still running dry.

That’s no longer poetry, that’s Tuesday in the Okanagan.

This is the Okanagan’s 4th consecutive year of drought. Lake levels, stream flows, and groundwater are all at record lows- Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake have both dropped below their entire 35 year historical range.

Kalamalka Lake is now in ā€˜dead pool’ condition, below its own outlet weir. The only reason our main water storage is holding right now is because we’ve been quietly draining that backup to prop it up. RDNO staff confirmed last Wednesday that backup option may not even be there next year.

Meanwhile, our local farmers were told to cut water use by 70% with a real warning they could be shut off completely if supply ran out. The City cut misting stations, park water features, and pressure washing just to hit a 50% municipal reduction target.

Here’s what actually concerns me most: this is year four of drought, but this is the first year we’ve hit Stage 3, the most severe restriction level GVW has. That tells me the system got through the first few years by drawing down reserves, not by building real capacity or locking in permanent solutions like expanded reclaimed water. Now that the reserve is gone there’s no backup plan – just more restrictions and hoping for rain. That’s not preparation. That’s coasting on savings until the account hits zero.

It also raises the bigger question: our regions Drought Management plan was last formally reviewed in 2017- based on an even older 2011 plan. Nearly a decade of worsening drought, and the plan guiding our response hasn’t had a real update since. If the plan itself is outdated, restrictions alone won’t fix that.

Here’s what I’ll actually push for:

āœ… Permanent, expanded reclaimed water use for irrigation and agriculture, not the temporary fix (expiring 2028) we only got after this crisis hit

āœ…A full, current review of the Drought/ Water Shortage Management Plan, not one still built on 2011/2017 assumptions

āœ…A hard public timeline on the reservoir/storage planning with farmers before restrictions hit, not scrambling mid-drought

āœ…Public reporting so residents aren’t the last to know how serious our water situation actually is

I want to know your opinion on whether Vernon has a water crisis or whether you feel it’s over stated. Whatever the answer is it should help shape what council does next.

Share this if you think Vernon residents deserve to know this before it’s an emergency and not after.
